Ireland Sender ID — Registration & Requirements

Overview

The Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) in Ireland has introduced a Sender ID Registry to protect consumers from fraudulent SMS. All alphanumeric sender IDs must be registered to continue sending SMS to Irish mobile users.

The new rules include phased enforcement:

  • From 3 July 2025 – Messages sent from unregistered sender IDs may be flagged as “Likely Scam”.
  • From 3 October 2025 – Messages sent from unregistered sender IDs may be blocked entirely.

Sender ID Requirements

When registering a sender ID in Ireland, the following rules apply:

  • Must be alphanumeric (cannot be numeric-only).
  • Length: 3–11 characters.
  • Must contain at least one letter.
  • Cannot be generic terms (e.g., “SMS”, “Doctor”, “Verify”).
  • Cannot contain offensive, obscene, or sensitive words.
  • No leading, trailing spaces.
  • Only permitted characters may be used (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, and limited special characters).
  • Must be unique — if your preferred sender ID is already registered, you may need to choose an alternative.

Registration Options

  1. Register directly on the ComReg Sender ID Registry

    • Your organization applies directly on the ComReg portal: https://senderid.comreg.ie
    • You will be the Sender ID Owner (SIDO) and can manage your sender IDs independently.

What Happens if You Don’t Register?

  • Messages from unregistered IDs may display as “Likely Scam” to recipients after 3 July 2025.
  • From 3 October 2025, unregistered IDs may be blocked completely.
  • Using non-compliant sender IDs may lead to failed delivery and reputational impact.
